IMPORTANT READ BEFORE Make your Grafting Request Order

Spring Grafted Trees should be ready the following Fall. Deadline is May 01

Late Summer & Fall Grafted Trees should be ready the following Spring. Deadline is October 01

A Pre-Order Grafting Request is an order for us to produce the specific tree that we don't currently have available in stock. We must graft the tree and then it must go through a multi-month process to heal and grow. Only Once the small tree has completed two flushes of growth since it was grafted do we consider it ready to leave our nursery.

Mapulehu is from Molokai, Hawaii and is also known as 'Joe Welch', the name of the man who planted the seed in 1929 at the property of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters association. It is speculated to have been a cross between the Pirie (see 'Bombay') and Haden. The Mapulehu received attention from horticulturalists in Hawaii due to its well-regarded eating quality but was found to perform poorly in wet areas so is largely confined to dry sections of the Hawaiian islands.

The fruit are small in size, ovately shaped, yellow and developing an orange/reddish blush. The flesh is fairly firm, with very minimal fiber, and has a very good Indian/West Indian flavor similar to that of Bombay. However, it must be allowed to ripen longer than most mangos to achieve its full flavor. Mapulehu has a monoembryonic seed.

The tree is a vigorous grower in Hawaii, though ours has actually grown very slowly. The growth habit is spreading and open.

We received our Mapulehu tree by mistake, as it was supposed to be an Excel. We are happy to have this tree though as we really like its flavor and look forward to continuing to evaluate it in our climate. The tree was planted in 2017, bore its first fruit the next year and its first significant crop in 2019. It has flowered and fruited consistently since, even flowering off unhardened/young growth frequently.

The fruit appears to be resistant to mango bacterial black spot. Mapulehu is a later midseason ripening mango for us, maturing most of its fruit in the second half of July.

Flavor: Indian-West Indian
