Our second most planted tree is the avocado (Persea americana).
Avocados likely originated thousands of years ago in modern Mexico.
They spread through central America and into the Caribbean where they became endemic.
Now grown on other continents as well, avocados are well appreciated for their buttery flavor, long season, and great culinary value. They also have many health benefits, and are high in monounsaturated fats, fiber, and potassium, along with various vitamins and antioxidants.
